Quick aside: This should have a (2020) tag.

The keyboard and mousepad on my Thinkpad have died twice. I've replaced it twice for 30 dollars each time. I would have had to buy a new laptop if I had something else. The conclusion about this being a hack and not a new economic model is why I'm hoping Framework seems success. Unfortunately I think my Thinkpad is on the way out for good and I plan to replace it with the Framework 16 when it is available, which I hope will last me just as long as my Thinkpad

If the keyboard or trackpad died on my laptop I would simply take it to be serviced. The company that made it has storefronts around the country where I can bring it in. They have an app that makes the scheduling easy.

In fact I just had the battery replaced after 5-6 years (I don’t quite remember). Works for me.

That's great that whoever makes your device(assuming Apple) has stores where they can do repairs. Having a repairable device doesn't mean you have to repair it yourself, it just means you can.

You not reading the thread is problematic. Meta is pledging 3 years of engineer time not money.

And it's 3 years of engineer time to work on this project, so I don't get the bribery insinuation. Engineer time to work on a specific project is only valuable if you consider the specific project valuable.

You could maybe make the argument that they're trying to swing priorities if this is considered valuable but less valuable than other things, but given the PSF doesn't actually employ anyone who it can direct to work on specific projects anyway, how is this any different from the already existing prioritisation process of "things that somebody is interested enough to go through the PEP process and then work on"?

TBH having CPython internal experiance is quite a qualification. They would probably contribute at least some of thier time in the no PEP 703 case so the delta is even leass.

It doesn't really matter to the argument though, no?

Time is money. Meta is pledging the salaries of three individuals.

But it is just for the nogil project. If suppose python foundation doesn't believe merit in GIL, they aren't getting any benefit out of the situation.

Never the less, the OP is incorrect. Time is money. The fact HN doesn't seem to recognize this and downvoted the comment is mystifying.

We all remember the anti-OSS 'Linux is only free if your time is free'.

Because the whole point of the thread is "It creates a conflict of interest because money" which it doesn't. Time costs money, sure, but time is not equal to money. There are many differences. Otherwise where is my money from HN.

Woah, are you kidding? I would have died to have people dedicated to OSS I worked on! Time is money. We get paid for our _time_ at the core of what we do as a profession. This should be plainly obvious.

The alternative is Meta puts in no money to salaries and benefits for up to three individual's time on this project, or Meta puts in no money at all.

Meta is paying, one way or another, for this project.

> Meta is paying, one way or another, for this project.

Did I deny this?

To put it in extreme clear example, just said time for someone to punch you != time for someone to work for you, while money is same all across. I hope you don't disagree with it.

Disney+ is a different animal in countries that aren't the US.

I'm in Hong Kong, I don't get what you mean. There's no porn or snuff movies on it here either, how tame is it in the US ? I bought it for my 5yo to get her Disney dose, do you guys buy it for even younger children ?

What other countries do you think exist outside the US? Why are there "different animals" of Disney streaming services ? Have you pursued your thought down to even quoting a few examples of what you imagine would happen in Tokyo, Johannesburg or Milan if you started Disney+ ?

He was probably referring to Disney Star which you can get with Disney+ in some countries outside the U.S. https://www.theverge.com/2020/12/10/22165950/disney-star-str...

This is what I'm referring to for the most part. There are other things like Disney+ carrying pro wrestling in other countries like Indonesia.

In the US it's trying very hard to appear kid/family friendly. To the point where the Disney+ versions of PG movies and many TV shows have extra censorship (you can look around online for lists of content that's been bowdlerized on Disney+)

In what way?

It’s a combination of Hulu and something called stars (which might actually be a reference to Hulu content)

Things marketed as stars inside the Disney plus app is content more adult than your typical Disney branding.

I enjoy them. It's a paragraph or so of easily digestible information. Not everyone has read something like Atomic Habits so the value is relative. Worst case scenario it acts as an excuse to kick off discussion.

The amount of hoop jumping people go through to avoid saying we should invest more in public transit is insane. You see it on HN every time someone mentions density or transit. No one is saying you can't have a car or should live in a downtown apartment, we just shouldn't build everything around having a car.

Nobody actually disagrees with this take, but here's what happens. This has happened now three times in my hometown.

1. Some Politician: We need to invest in public transportation.

2. Planning Commission: Okay but it's geographically infeasible to blanket the city in busses, the only thing that is going to work is a rail system to cover the long distances and have busses to cover the last mile.

3. Sounds great! Let's put together a proposal.

4. Politician: Hahahahahahahaha we can't afford that. Also people will riot if we eminent domain literally thousands of homes.

5. Politician: What if we just added really annoying bike lanes to like 3 roads that will sit there empty because a dedicated lane wasn't what was stopping people from riding their bikes?

6. Planning Commission: But that won't actually he....

7. Politician: LOOK AT HOW WE'RE INVESTING IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION!!1 MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. GREEN. ENVIRONMENT.

Like good lord if they would actually commit to more than just some symbolic non-solutions I would volunteer to swing a hammer to lay tracks.

Why is it geographically infeasible to expand bus service in a city? Most medium to large US cities are designed with a grid system which would fit more buses perfectly. My city recently expanded one of the main roads to 6 lanes when they could easily done a BRT instead.

> Politician: What if we just added really annoying bike lanes to like 3 roads that will sit there empty because a dedicated lane wasn't what was stopping people from riding their bikes?

Three dedicated lanes won't be what was stopping people from riding bikes (in most cases) but a network of them sure would increase ridership.

We should invest more in public transit, but there is literally 100 years of built infrastructure which has fueled patterns of development which make taking transport unattractive. So we can invest more, just dont expect it to result in many fewer cars.

More bus lanes would be a cheap and easy start. The problem with current car centered cities is that taking transit is slower than taking a car so people with the means use the fastest transit option by driving. If you remove minimum parking laws and increase bus lanes which let transit users bypass traffic, this is a low cost way to encourage more transit usage.

The idea behind the phrase is that cops are either bastards or they sit by and let other cops be bastards and are themselves bastards. Any cop who doesn't sit by and let other cops abuse citizens isn't a cop for very long.

When you find out let me know. Almost 10 years in and I don't know what I'm doing most the time.

I use the extension BlockTube to filter out videos by channel and I think it works pretty well since I only need to right click on a video and can block the entire channel. That means you have to trust another extension.

That being said, it is an understatement to say I can't tolerate the internet without uBlock Origin. I get so much value out of this project I would donate 10-20% of my salary to the project if they allowed donations.

For YouTube, I go the other way and instead of blacklisting channels, I use https://unhook.app to only see my subscriptions and nothing else. No Home feed suggestions, no sidebar, no end screen cards, etc.

there are some gems the YT homepage can bring you. be sure to delete the dumb meme recap you watched at 3am from the watch history and the algorithm can work for you.

Oh, wow. Didn't know I can do that. Thanks, it was getting really hard to train the algo again with the things I want recommended on a certain account after accidentally searching for something of interest for another account.

Be sure to also mark videos as "Not interested" on your homepage, if you also did not know about that. You can even tell them not to recommend an entire channel.

The not interested button doesn't really work for me, it just blocks that particular video but other videos in that category still show up no matter what.

The “Don’t recommend channel” button also doesn’t really work for me. It used to work, but now the channels keep coming back. YouTube has been trying to get me to watch videos from “Dr.” Sten Ekberg. After watching one video a couple years ago I quickly realised he’s full of shit. I’ve clicked the “Don’t suggest channel” button so many times, but after a short while his videos return to my feed.

I've done that for a while too.

Often if I want to watch a one-off video topic, I'll view it in private mode, so it doesn't get added to history. Then I don't really mess up the algorithm.

Any idea if this is smart enough to show all new content from your subscriptions or does it only show the select choices that YouTube makes for you (another infuriating YouTube design choice).

Didn't know this extension existed, thank you. I don't actually subscribe to any Youtube channels and mainly search for what I want at the time but this may be a healthier way to use Youtube.

This is my standard response. Internet without ubo is like having unprotected sex

this is such a bad analogy, unprotected sex is objectively way better just riskier. ads on the web are in no way better, and maybe marginally riskier than no ads

So exciting and dangerous? I may have to give the ad infested internet a try /s

Like, with another person?

No, like digital stimulation of your member.

while sandy

I can't use Youtube without Blocktube. Currently at 11,000 blocked channels and still going strong - it's amazing how the same junk keeps cropping up just under different names.

I wish I knew about it sooner, it took me almost a year to "train" the algo to recommended me only certain topics of interest. I could've saved some scrolling time at the beginning.

Can you create a category just for Delta Chat messages? I've never used Delta Chat but in Gmail you can create categories and tabs so I would be able to create a category just for Delta Chat messages. Is there some sort of thing like that in Thunderbird or whatever email provider you use?

Everyone learns better with a teacher because no matter how you think you learn best, getting feedback from someone who actually knows what they are talking about is required.

It depends on the matter, purely technical & learning subjects is fine.

On personal & spiritual development it's very useful.

You can learn most things on your own and be "fine." But having a teacher accelerates your rate of learning beyond that.

To be honest, i'm impatient and stubborn. When most people explain me things take so long I rather read or google it. Talking is slow, and people take a long time to get to the point.

Often the process of formulating the question by writing it down or talking about leads me to understand the problem and either know where to find the answer or often know the answer. On theoretical matters I hardly ever had a question that wasn't answered properly by someone online or in a book.

I think you're equating teacher with lecturer because of how classes are taught in school. They are not the same thing. A teacher can just be someone that gives you feedback and corrects you when you make missteps. If I recall correctly, this way of teaching is the idea behind Montessori schools.

I had both, in university, but also professinal seniors, or in family.

Same, and it's pretty funny that people are downvoting you for this. Some people truly believe that their subjective perspective is the truth for everyone.
