As implemented they also lack conceptual integrity: you get them somehow (where are they?), and somehow you can use them (how, exactly?) but you can't enumerate them anywhere, see them, see where they came from and what they can do for you.

The worst offender for me is the Costco mobile app. It's handy because it allows you to enter the store by scanning the QR code it displays on start up. However it also nags you to create a passkey. You can dismiss this by saying that you want to keep using a password. But then it nags you again next time. This behavior is problematic because the delay between opening the app and the "create a passkey" splash dialog (which hides the QR code) is exactly the time it takes to pull the phone out, open the app and present the screen under the reader at the door. Every single time I need to look back at the phone screen to see why it didn't scan, dismiss the passkey nag, bring up the QR code again, scan.

In the US at least if a lawyer screws up a contract beyond what a competent lawyer would and causes financial harm they can be sued.

The American thousands of pounds thing is even more weird than that: I buy gravel from the gravel pit. They weigh my truck and dump trailer in lbs and then charge me per ton. Everyone talks about tons: e.g. I'd call a dump truck operator and ask him to deliver 18 tons of rock, not 36,000lbs. But the weighbridge and road signs and regulations about vehicle and axle weight are always in lbs. If you only read things and never talked to other people you'd never know tons existed.

I wonder if using pounds exclusively stems from a time when the word ton was potentially ambiguous. In both British Imperial and US Customary one ton means 20 hundredweight (20 cwt) but the hundredweight differs between the two countries, 112 lb in Imperial, 100 lb in US Customary resulting in the US Customary ton being the short ton of 2 000 lb and the Imperial ton being the long ton of 2 240 lb.

Using only lb avoids confusion.
