Because despite Apple having clear guidelines a huge number of developers think their 'custom UI' is what customers really want. When they don't. The best apps use system components and follow the HIG. Always have, always will. Your custom tab bar is stupid.
How do you expect things to be popular without a company with self-interest? Producing a linux phone that people want requires immense capital, they're not just spending that and then releasing as open source forever.
By the time the product becomes "popular", it's then just one more platform that needs to follow investor interest and laws.
Valve is kinda doing that with SteamOS ? It's primarily made for their own hardware, but they also use work time to add features for installs on non valve hardware, and all of their components are open source.
Yikes. I had to stop using JetBrains software for similar reason (their autosave effectively conflicted with external git usage). This is inexcusable to me but to each their own.
Yes, but I think it still behaved weirdly with external changes. It's been a few years now, maybe it discarded any unsaved changes and just re-read the version from disk, or maybe it auto closed any editors for files that didn't exist after a branch change. Awkward behavior like that. VSCode and Sublime Text are much better in this regard.
As someone who uses a single password manager on my computer and phone, I don't see the problem with passkeys. I use Safari on both and I never even had to "set up" anything.
I can see why they would be problematic for people who otherwise live life with a single love2025 password though.
Imagine you lose your computer and phone. How do you recover your digital accounts? This happens every day to someone. The most common scenario being a house fire or robbery.
Receiving an email at your backup email address? Getting a text message? It’s whatever you have decided to set up in your account, the same as with a password.
I think the point with a passkey is that those very loose backup methods are required, since just knowing the password is not a thing. Everyone gets a new phone and is at risk of the previous one being unavailable. So passkeys mean that there's no way to deal with that reality, and also be truly secure.
Unlike physical objects they may reside in a TPM, a software vault, an export/backup, or any combination thereof. You may or may not be able to recover or migrate them, depending on where/how they were made.
Therefore you may need multiple per service, or maybe not. Services which only allow one may end up locking you out with no recourse. You get to find out.

As for normies, passkeys or passwords it doesn't make a difference. Either you have people who use love1969 everywhere or those who constantly lose their passwords.
All passkeys accounts for normies require an email or phone number, which is what you can use to recover a password or passkey exactly the same way.
Probably because these caveats and weird behaviours are platform-dependent, not really the passkey’s fault.
Passkeys really are not any more difficult to explain than 2-factor authentication. Anyone who’s currently been able to actually create an Apple or Google account and successfully navigate their devices up to a passkey screen will be able to grok how it works.

I don't care about the theoretical sufficiently advanced keypass implementation that works perfectly. I want to know about the half baked ones in the real world that I'll have to deal with.
Arguably Yubikey and similar are better. Even vanilla passwords are at least understood by my parents, despite their confusion over account proliferation. Passkeys are a step backward for them, even more so in light of account confusion.
They're separate stores. I was under the same assumption until I tried to use `security` to get a saved password. It doesn't work, and as far as I know there is no CLI for the Passwords app's store.
well, actually I had tested in iphone and did some things to but back on mesh size & also streaming terrain so that I'm not overrendering textures. I have not tested on all devices as I only have one mobile device. The tradeoff is render quality - maybe I'll make a lower triangle or 2K texture mode?
"Better" is subjective. I've been using iOS 27 beta and other than a few bugs it hasn't been that bad. I only had some minor downgrades in Safari UI, but those are minor and personal.
One thing I hated was a downgrade in Photos app on iOS 26 though, that hasn't improved in 27. Unfortunately it seems I was the only one loving Photos on iOS 18.
I did jump from macOS 18 to macOS 27 beta though and Safari's UI is abhorrent.
How is that possible? iPhones have had varying screen sizes for more than a decade, how could any app still have a fixed size?
