How is this any different from people in any field that are impacted by AI and lose the utility of their skills and endeavors over the past decades? Are we saying that we're running out of problems to solve because of AI and hence it should be stopped? I am not underestimating the importance of the collective knowledge of the mathematics community and the role of mathematics as the enablers of other sciences, but opposing meaningful progress in that discipline or any for that matter feels counter intuitive. I would rather have the mathematics community start collaborating closely with the this newly evolving and powerful tool to expedite humanity's progress.
Do you see an end state in this? When AI is better than humans at everything (and I used to be very sceptical of that claim but I'm getting less and less by the day), I don't see the Wall-E version of humanity as some sort of utopia, and that's the good outcome.
To paraphrase the not-so-great philosopher Ted Kaczynski: Either we will maintain control of the machines or we won't. And if we do, it won't be you or I who control them, but a small group of elites.
His point is twofold: that the process of solving the problems leads to more than just solving the problem in front of you but other interesting things (he has an example of going on a hike to a waterfall and all the other things you might spot over in the distance or nearby on the way, which you’d miss if you were able to jump straight there), and also lots of the simpler open problems are ones early researchers learn on (this is akin to the “if we automate junior engineers how does anyone learn to be a senior?”).
Ability to jump straight to waterfall doesn't prevent you from taking another hike looking specifically for those other things.
If solving any problem is possible with ai, the job of mathematician is finding new problems, not trying to do what a machine can do better.
As for training, most of it is already done by solving known problems, and no one was suggesting to forget analytical geometry so that solving school geometry problems becomes cutting edge research.
you exclude yourself from the possibility space of people who can act and do anything becasue you resign. so be it- that's your choice. create that reality you desire.

You'd be surprised what hate is capable of. Once you paint a side as the enemy and convince half of the population of that, it becomes easy to carryout acts even if they're detrimental to the your side too. Look at the US economy and inflation caused by the tariffs and wars for instance. It's the 'our side is winning' mentality shortsightedness that destroys nations and institutions. By the time people realize this, it's often too late.
Maybe a dumb question, but when navigating the worlds on the site, I notice that the space is 3D, but the objects (the drum set, or the vending machine) are flat 2D layers that one cannot walk around or examine from a different angle. Is this the inherit limitation of the approach or future features? Thanks.
“Spray and pray” is a deliberately belittling term for an approach that YC largely pioneered and has delivered outsized returns over two decades. There’s no “pray” about it. YC partners work incredibly hard to attract and select the most promising founders and support them through their most nascent and fragile stages. They keep turning out huge successes, whilst also giving off the appearance that most funded companies are unimpressive. That’s always been true; it’s the easy thing to focus on for people who are motivated to be critical, but it’s a valueless observation.

Convenient narrative, but not at all a new phenomenon. I had friends like this in the 90's. And I'm not seeing more people like this than in those days.
I know we're kind of used to rapid societal change at this point, but I'd still consider the 90s or even the 80s recent enough that I could call things that arose in those times as "new phenomena"... from a broader societal standpoint at least.
Not even just the 90s. This is self-stimming behaviour. People have been doing this for as long as there’ve been entertainment. This is just normal human behaviour. People using technology to aid them in this is just the modern day version of it. It’s normal. And it’s frankly quite ridiculous to see adults thinking this is ye old “people are soooooo into tech nowadays, them junkies!!!111!!!11!1!”. C’mon now.
It is a problem of degree, not of kind, in contemporary society. The degree today to which people require / can seek out distractions today is not likely "normal" compared to what we know of past human history, although the desire to do so is likely the same old desire that has always been there.
The issue is not just bank or CC accounts, but your personal data accounts (Email, photos, SMS, calendar, documents, etc.) that give the necessary context to the agent to do useful work for you. That's where the problem lies.
