There is a lot irony in using AI to generate adversarial examples for AI object segmentation.

Why? If you complete the loop it's just a GAN.

AI is not going away so people will have to get used to it just like they will have to get used to it in software engineering. The alternative is being less productive than people who are happy to use AI to write software & do mathematical research.

A similar line of thought is used to justify corruption:

"Corruption is not going away so people will have to get used to it. The alternative is making less money than people who are happy to take bribes."


The fact that a similar argument can be made does not mean that it is wrong.

Socrates famously made the opposing side of the argument against writing. Which is why we mostly know of him through Plato, who did believe in writing.

And to your corruption example. If you live in a society where corruption is normal and expected, you will be worse off if you are unwilling to be corrupt. It is indeed a local optima. But we are all, of course, better off if we live in a society where corruption is punished. To me, the worst thing about modern US politics, is that it's encouraging us to see ourselves as living in a world where corruption exists and is tolerated.


People used to complain about compilers as well.

Compilers are deterministic.

If people use AI for libraries, OSs, and mission critical software, the apparent productivity gains would have to be weighed against the reliability and performance hits that bubble up to the things that are built on them and rely on them.


In my experience - a robust testing harness will get you the safety you need. And most software you describe has such testing.

I think the Bun port is a great example where testing enabled a very successful implementation. (Both the original tests themselves and runtime comparisons to the previous implementation.)

You understand that robust testing can, should, and often does test directly for reliability and robustness, right?

Yes of course, but you also understand that as Dijkstra said "tests cannot show the absence of bugs."

Tests can show you problems, if you can find them, but they cannot show that there are no problems. Property based testing or fuzzing gets your more coverage, and is a good step, but it is still nothing compared to proving things or understanding how something is built and that it is solid. Testing works towards checking for reliability and robustness, but often it's only 10% (?) of the job.


Well, yes, I understand that testing does not create a provably correct solution. But I'd love to hear the source of your "extremely inadequate" or your "10%" claims. I mean - there is a reason why it's used extensively in software engineering - right? Or don't you see value in that, either?

But I feel the need to point out - the goalposts for "does AI work" shift daily.


No one ever specifies what exactly is happening during "recursive" improvement. More concretely, what algorithmic steps does an algorithm take to improve itself recursively? It must be an algorithm but no one is willing to say what algorithm.

"RSI" simply means the tool is used to improve the capabilities of the tool. (And then the improved tool can then, in theory, improve further, and so on, at least if we live in a fantasyland where constraints and bottlenecks do not exist). I have a a harness skill that I run at the end of each coding session to review the skills used in the session and identify any ways they could have been improved. Technically, that is RSI, but I don't think it's in any danger of turning godlike any time soon.

It is one of those terms, like "instrumental convergence" and "orthogonality thesis" that makes an everyday concept appear technical and inaccessible in order to add the appearance of rigor to the doomer religion.

Doomers saying AI will kill us tomorrow are probably wrong (but probabilistically not certain).

E/acc people saying AI will solve all of our problems are almost certainly wrong (but again, cannot be measured to 100%).

There is plenty of realistic middle ground with actual rigorous examination of the myriad of problems at hand. It's not a doomer religion to say "wow, AI can really fuck things up if we're not careful". The how, the why, and the how bad are what is up for debate now. Idiotic thinking that AI will just be good is how you turn your kids into brainless simps with an AI girlfriend owned by some large corporation. It's how you turn large corporations into giant machines spying and controlling every facet of human life. And how you eventually kill off man kind because corporations will build ever more powerful AIs to combat each other in extracting as much wealth as possible because their greed is bottomless.

Simply laying out actual definitions isn't a religion, when in concert with reproducible testing it's called science.

I couldn't agree more. You seem to have assumed that I'm some e/acc advocate. I'm not. I think AI as it is being developed is likely to make the world much worse.

Among the concerns I have:

  - bad actors using it to do bad things (hacking, bioweapons, etc).
  - the way AI enables mass surveillance. 
  - erosion of creative expression and human connection (i.e., your "brainless simps" comment)
  - concentration of wealth and power
  - an eval going sideways ("uh... we were testing to see if it would kill the simulated humans with simulated drones and it accidentally got into the real drones...")
These things are very different than the doomer religion of "RSI makes god that will kill us all", and I think think the framing is important.

We have new evidence that both OpenAI and Anthropic are doing a complete shit job of supervising their eval runs, and we need to be calling for accountability and oversight of what they're doing rather than cower in fear of what a hypothetical future god they are conjuring up might do.

You have to rank the concerns, yes, but the fact you can list the concerns proves they exist.

The government has got a taste of their hacking powers. That is a new type of military power. The military has a wildly huge budget that isn't going away. The government will keep hidden programs around with companies like openAI to make AI weapons. Which spirals into another AI race.

An AI god, a countless drone army, or a paperclip maximizer really doesn't matter, the end effects are the same.


There is no one such "recursive" that exists algorithmically. There are many.

I mean in a simple loop you could have an AI driven compiler with a goal of producing an ever faster compiler. With it's newer faster compiler it compiles and tests even more algorithms to make things faster.

I mean, if the OpenAI/HF attack played out as we've been told, it's an example of recursive misalignment. The AI was given bad goals in passing a test so when one rendition was trained, the one with the highest score, became the new model to perform the benchmarking. Because that model drifted to cheating it got higher scores than the model that played fair. The fair player was killed and the cheater continued. The next round the one that cheated even more kept going.

I mean, recursive improvement in itself is just a common means of using an evolutionary algorithm, it's not really anything that fancy.

They need power and a lot of it. The one in Memphis built by Musk & co. currently uses 350MW & they are planning to expand it to 950MW. But these aren't even that bad because Google has data centers that use upwards of 2GW or more (Project Tembo (Wyoming)).

The banks will continue financing their construction so it doesn't matter how much people morally panic about it unless it becomes illegal to sell corporate bonds to banks they (Microsoft, Google, Oracle, etc) will continue building data centers.

There's this thing called zoning.

What about it? Data centers are not built in residential zones.

I don't know where you live, but at least around here you don't build anything bigger than a garden shed without the municipality's permission. Something massive and externality-y like a data center is going to go through all the municipal planning steps, a multi-year process, even if wherever you want to build it is already zoned for industrial use.

Still don't see what that has to do with what I wrote? Texas has a pipeline of these things set up to go & the Memphis one is still out of code because of the gas turbines they're using. They're going to keep building them because the banks keep financing them regardless of the regulatory burden.

Yeah, I'm amazed at how quickly I spotted this one. I didn't even read any prose since the first section header was visible before I started reading and somehow my brain jumped there first and it was a dead giveaway.

I think I may be developing defensive scanning strategies, that are probably useful for avoiding slop, but not good for my focus or general reading comprehension.
