I'd spent years listening to a proper pirate station over the internet (I was too far from the actual transmitters in London) and being part of a chatroom…and it was all taken away without warning. From memory, it really upset me. This station and its ethos was such a part of my life for so long, and it just…went away.
As I understand it, Rinse cherry-picked the Kool London DJs they wanted to continue, and a notable number of the remaining talent went on to form / join Underground Bass[1], get a stream online[2], and get on with things. A lot of the behind-the-scenes folks also went to UB, and the DIY spirit lives on.
I recognise around 10 of the current Rinse Kool roster from the Kool London era, and around 20 of the current Underground Bass roster are from the Kool London era.
As your link points out, in Dutch this is also known as "komkommertijd" ("cucumber time"), and in German as "Sauregurkenzeit", ("pickled cucumber time").
The funny thing is that apparently "cucumber time" also existed as an expression in English for a while in the 18th century. One suggested etymological origin for the Dutch "komkommertijd" was as a loan work from the English around the same period, except ttat it survived after the English stopped using it. According to some sources cited on the Dutch wiki page the expression was mainly used by German tailors in London.
The modern German equivalent would probably be "Sommerloch" [1], describing the time when most politics is on hold because of summer vacations and news outlets try to fill the void with whatever story they find. The usual writers and editors being on vacation too during this time doesn't help.
Merged 6 months ago. This hardly seems newsworthy, even if it was at the time it was being merged. `enshittification` being thrown around for a single console line on a piece of software you probably aren't paying for seems like a supremely entitled free loading response.
I have a terrible work / non-work balance, and one trivial habit I've established is turning off my (Mac mini & MacBook Air) computers & screens when my work time is done.
I don't want it to be trivially easy for me to just do one more thing…there be dragons.
My Saturday mornings are more often markers for running Onyx[1] for maintenance.
