I wear silicone ring in the gym, in my workshop, and working on or sailing boats and a platinum band when I'm not doing manual stuff. I could wear no ring at all, but I don't particularly like the optics of an obviously married man with tan lines on ring finger not wearing his ring: I think it makes you look like there's something wrong with you - recently divorced at best, a sleazy creep at worst. Should I care? No, but I'm not that well adjusted. Silicone is basically as safe as no ring at all for almost any manual or physical activity. Metal rings offer an entire exciting catalog of spectacularly horrible accidents for the low price of one tiny slip.

Yes we really went there, quite a few times in the 1970s. We have been again, also several times, with rovers and landers. As for why not humans since then? There's bugger all there to justify the extreme cost (at this time). It's an unpleasant ball made from tiny abrasive dust particles that is more easily explored with robots. The prestige thing is done; until we set up some base there in support of some broader mission (scientific or exploratory) there isn't a reason to send people.

The program itself was really, really, really cool and is worth reading about. A truly enormous achievement involving millions of people and an entire country's scientific and engineering capacity.
I've listened through those flights few times and it still each time takes me back to memories still giving me goosebumps. Especially Apollo 11 when I was nine year old kid listening tiny battery radio all nights at our summer cottage attic.

The juxtaposition of someone's instinct to be thinking of bitcoin when reading about indigenous trade is at the best a bit funny, and at the worst small-minded when you consider the havoc those Australians brought onto their culture. Basically wiped out a foundational part of their way of life in an instant for their own gain. It's sad. That was my takeaway.
This is a fun example of the cognitive switch you have to employ when first starting to program a computer. It's extremely easy for a human to pick at random one thing from a pile of things: you reach out your hand and grab it, maybe swirling them around on the table first to shuffle the order. For a computer, there's no direct analogy to that. They just can't do it. And the human process is nothing even slightly like the one the computer follows: we don't have to count the sets and iterate over them, or count the items and then generate a random number to pick the nth item, or risk picking a null item.
I think this article highlights more the importance of understanding system limits in the 1990s versus today. No-one would care to much today if the code review for this feature had “files.count()” or whatever in it, but in the mid 90s that would have been a huge performance red flag because a user would literally hear their hard drive clicking away and see the blinkenlights.
The problem isn’t counting the files (the algorithm in the article also counts the files), but that if you determine that you want to use the ith file only after counting all files, you have to iterate over the whole directory again (or over expected half of it) to find that file.
The mechanism is interesting, but I'm not fully understanding the importance. We say it was done this way because a user would appreciate the speedup. The difference is one traversal versus expected one and one-half traversals. How slow was this traversal at the time for this difference to be significant?
It will depend on details like file system fragmentation (Windows XP could run on FAT32), but it could conceivably make a perceptible difference on a slow HDD when there are many pictures in the directory. You also have to check more error cases, for when the second iteration fails for some reason. The mindset was probably "why complicate the code with multiple iterations and make it less efficient?" when the efficient solution is straightforward and arguably simpler.
Apart from the performance issues, it also prevents a bug. If some files get deleted between the first and the second pass, then you end up with unexpected behaviour and probably a crash.
Yes, but the the implementation with the additional iteration also has to have extra checks for that iteration, because it can't blindly iterate to the ith file, as there may not be i files anymore. So the implementation gets more complex overall.

You don’t. You have RO at the point of consumption. At any rate, it’s our approach, we store 150,000L in a cistern over the winter and use it through the summer. An under-the-counter domestic RO system can be had for like $200, the membranes last about a year with our usage, and are like $15 a pop. Post-RO storage tank UV block too because I like belts and braces.
Non-potable just goes through the usual barrels full of sand and biochar, and doesn’t need further treatment.

It's not really disgusting inside, mostly just filled with sediment... which is coming from your water source anyway. Same story, filter and boil as needed.
Either way, much easier than maintaining potable water for the rest of your life for an event that might not ever happen. We haven't had such an event in my area for 100 years. In a pinch with a little boiling you've probably got something in the area of 40-50 gallons available this way.
It's probably significantly easier to machine it this way. The pipe is curved, so work holding isn't straightforward. Once the blank is installed in its place in the bearing chamber face then you can just move that larger part around to machine all the features in it, including the counterbore.

I bought a 5090 a year an a half ago for $2000. The same card, now a year and a half older, is $4000. Then there is the RAM - I bought 96GB, wishing it was 128, and now the price on my old RAM has doubled.

I also bought 96GB some while ago but after the initial increases, thinking I'll wait it out. Now 128GB is far more expensive than it was when I first looked. Luck has it I want DDR5 RDIMM as well, which seems the hardest hit when it comes to RAM prices, fun stuff.
Isn't OP complaining that the price went up because people want them for AI use? I guess it also went up because of cloud AI use increasing component costs, but those local models you want to run probably were trained in the cloud..

The base price of a mini has only gone up $200 from $699 in 2020 to $899 today, and for $699 you only got 8GB of RAM instead of 16. Yeah the price has gone up but not nearly as much as you seem to be remembering...
